Lake Izabal Region And Lake Atitlan’s Water Becoming Toxic, Undrinkable

Foreign mining interests and over pollution threaten very existence of Mayan culture and their fresh water reservoirs

While the Mayans are struggling to preserve the quality of their drinking water at Lake Atitlan, other parts of Guatemala are experiencing the same assault on fresh water reserves.

In the Lake Izabal region, local fisherman and farmers have petitioned the Canadian government to control nickel mining operations, threatening the purity of the fresh water supply.

Concerned citizens from America and Canada have joined forces with the Mayans at Lake Izabal to petition both governments in Guatemala and Canada to clean-up mining operations before toxic chemicals make water in the area undrinkable.
